Well we are gearing up for holiday gift-giving in the FrugalCrafter household. I don’t think there is a window sill around that doesn’t hold a ball of yarn and a project in processes (PIP for short) I’ve been teaching my children to knit. My 7-year-old son made the skinny scarf in this photo:
He made the pom-poms too with a great pom-pom maker from Susan Bates:
It is the easiest one I’ve ever used. I showed him to knit on his fingers, it’s easy. Fist you make a slip knot and place it on the thumb of your left hand, then weave the yarn through your fingers, go around the pinky and weave back. Make sure to hold your hand with your palm facing you. If you are a leftie start with the yarn on your right hand 😉 Weave the yarn through and back again until you have 2 strings on each finger then lift the bottom string over the top (and over your finger) the knitting will form at the back of your hand. Weave the yarn through again and lift the bottom string over the top. continue until it is the length you want. This is a good introduction to loom knitting.
The hat was made on a loom, I used the green Knifty Knitter loom from ProvoCraft.
The process is nearly the same. You wrap the yarn around the pegs rather than weaving but the lifting is the same. To make the hat use a string of boucille (Lion brand Boucille Popsicle) and Jiffy (or any worsted weight yarn) held together and knit for 10 inches. Then divide the stitches on two knitting needles and use a 3rd needle to do a 3 needle bind off. Attach a pom-pom at each end. I made one of my crocheted flowers out of Sugar and cream cotton yarn and stitched it on the hat and added a button.
My 5-year-old daughter is making a hat for her new baby cousin on the small loom. She really likes it although last night she said “I’m getting kind if sick of doing this” luckily she only has a couple more rows to go and she’ll be done.
