Relax, it’s almost Christmas! Let’s make a quick gift!

Hello friends,  if you are like most you are probably busy scurrying around to finish wrapping, shopping and crafting.  Today I am going to share an easy project you can make for a gift (or you might need one for yourself if you have been hunched over the craft table for days!) and it only takes about 15 minutes and it is always appreciated. A microwavable/freezable hot/cold rice pack! You will need: cotton fabric a fat quarter (or scrap fabric, mine was 18″x22″ but you can make them any size), rice and a sewing machine and thread. Watch the video to see how it is made:

You can even make them smaller for hand warmers!  These are a great addition to a gift basket or a lovely gift on their own, You can add whole flax-seed (up to a 1:1 ratio) and I hear that the bags will stay hotter longer. You can even add your favorite dried herbs to the bags for lovely smells. I’ll be back later today with more last minute gift ideas! Til then happy crafting!

  1. Lindsay, I love this. The bag that I have had for years is losing the
filling and is totally worn out. Your video today is a life saver, I can do this. My filling looks like caraway seed size, dont know what it is or what else you can use besides rice for the filling. I do know the cherry pit bag was great in the beginning until I had this one. I found the smaller filling easier to use and more flexable on the shoulders.

  2. I have to make one for me. They are the best when you get that crafters cramp at the back of the neck. I had one given to me one time and used it until it got so grungy I had to throw it out. Thanks for reminding me, when I get the machine out I’ll make a bunch for late gifts, I’m not celebrating with friends until the 7th of January. LOL

  5. Oh how I would LOVE one of these NOW to put on my knee. The Physical Therapist gave me an ice pack that had a leak in it so they were not going to use it. I taped it, but it is now so flat it doesn’t stay cold long….and I still have to ice my knee 3-4 times a day!!! I guess I better get to a store soon and buy a fat quarter…and some rice! Thanks so much for the video Lindsay!

  6. I always wondered what was in these things…I have a several heat bag things that have been gifted to me over the years (because I am always cold) and they cost a small fortune. Now I am thinking I will be making my own when my current ones fail (microwaving them multiple times a day, for months at a time, I am thinking the fabric will break down eventually……)
Thank you so much for this fabulous tutorial! Have a wonderful Christmas with your family. 🙂
